Keep unit upright.Installation Steps: 1. Use the template provided in your kit to mark out where you want to put the top hole A and bottom hole B. We recommend using one of the side walls or the back corner. Using the back wall can blow the conditioned air right out the front door making the unit less efficient. This is a good time to place the unit in the desired position next to the house and ensure the hoses are positioned properly with the least amount of bends. 2. Use the Metal Hole Saw to drill hole A and B.3. Attach Coupling –Return Air a. Center a coupling over Hole B. b. Three sides of the coupling should be flush to the wall and one side has a small gap for sliding the filters in and out. c. Make sure the fourth side is facing to the side you would like to remove the filter from. d. Attach Coupling. e. Insert Filter into slot on coupling. f. Ensure that filter is properly seated. 4. Attach Coupling—Air Supply (Same as above BUT NO FILTERS!!)5. Attach one hose to the coupling on hole A and one hose to the coupling on hole B. Secure each hose A pinch clip. 6. Connect the Climate Control Unit by Connecting hose A to the top coupling on the unit and hose B to the bottom coupling on the unit. Turn the unit on for 15 minutes, off for 5 minutes and back on for 15 minutes. Performance:With a well built and insulated structure you can expect to see a 20 degree variance in the temperature of your dog house heater. Other variables out of our control can affect the final outcome, such as voids, direct sunlight, wind, snow, ice, size, structure and material just to name a few.
Initial Setup:
Please refer to the “Installation Instructions” document included with the unit.
IMPORTANT NOTE: To prime the unit for initial usage, turn the unit on for 15 minutes, off for 5 minutes and back on for 15 minutes. This helps to distribute the coolant throughout all the seals in the compressor and help the unit’s air conditioning function operate at peak efficiency.
After your unit has been properly installed and primed, the Operating Instructions below are provided to help you understand how to use the unit for optimal comfort and enjoyment.
The Operator Dials:
The Doowaggle Climate Control unit has two (2) operating dials on the faceplate on the front of the unit:
The upper dial is used to enable either the heating element or the cooling system. Both the heating and cooling systems have two fan speeds to choose from, high and low.
If you turn the upper dial clockwise, you are engaging the unit in cooling mode. The first position is for the cooling mode’s low blower speed and the second position is for the cooling mode’s high blower speed.
If you turn the upper dial counter-clockwise, you are engaging the unit in heating mode. The first position is for the heating mode’s low blower speed and the second position is for the heating mode’s high blower speed.
The lower dial is used to set the temperature for either the heater or air conditioner, whichever function is currently enabled by the upper dial. There is a thermostat inside the unit that will automatically turn the unit off when the temperature set by the dial is attained. When the thermostat detects a temperature differential, the unit will automatically turn back on again. If the temperature dial is turned clockwise, you will be setting the unit to maintain a cooler temperature and if turn counter-clockwise, a warmer temperature.
Functional Overview:
Air Conditioner, Heater, Dehumidifier
The Doowaggle Climate Control unit is technically two products in one. The unit has a built in air conditioner and a heater. The system operates in only one of these modes at time, set by the upper dial on the faceplate. If the upper dial is turned clockwise from the “Off” position, the unit operates as an Air Conditioner. If the upper dial is turned counter-clockwise from the “Off” position, the unit operates as a Heater.
Unless the unit is switched to “Off”, the blower fan will always operate. There are two speeds of the fan, High and Low, and they are user selected with the upper dial.
If the AC or heater is automatically turned off by the thermostat (based on the temperature level set by the operator with the lower dial on the faceplate), the unit will continue to blow air at the High or Low fan speed selected. This is helpful to keep air circulating in the temperature controlled space, whether or not the air is still being heated or cooled. When in the air conditioning mode, the Doowaggle Climate Control unit also serves as a dehumidifier removing excess moisture from the air. It is capable of lowering humidity levels below 70% thus helping to prevent mold and mildew growth in your enclosure. Because the unit is only 2500 BTU, it does not produce much condensate so unit was not designed with a drain. A small amount of condensate may be produced, so install the unit in a location keeping that in mind.
The pollen filters in the unit's kit provide active control of airborne particles such as dust, pollen, and pet dander or fur when used with dog houses. These filters can be installed in the unit’s intake and output ports on the front of the Doowaggle Climate Control unit. They are washable and change out in a matter of seconds.
Temperature Control
Another important thing to understand is that the unit was designed as a portable unit to control temperatures in small spaces. As such, it has a lower performance air conditioner than what some customers may expect based upon their experience with common in the industry that are most often 10,000 BTU and above. At 2500 BTU, the air conditioner does not produce “ice cold” air.
To achieve cooler temperatures, the unit is designed as a closed loop system, taking mostly recycled air from the temperature controlled space instead of pulling in new air from outside. There is some new air intake to preserve freshness, but it is minimal compared to the amount of air recycled through the system.
The Doowaggle Climate Control unit doesn’t work like some other units that rapidly cool or heat the air and then kick off. It is designed for a more continual operation making small gradual adjustments to the air temperature. This method of reconditioning the recycled air requires a lot less power for the unit to operate making it ideal to run off of a small power generator.
Maintenance:
The Doowaggle Climate Control unit is a very low maintenance product if used under normal operating circumstances. Here are a few things however that you can do to keep your Doowaggle Climate Control unit running at peak performance:
Cleaning the Air Filters
The Doowaggle Climate Control unit has a parts kit that includes two (2) circular air filters that can be installed in the air intake and output ports on the front of the unit. After prolonged use in an environment with exposure to airborne debris such as pet fur, these filters should be periodically removed and cleaned.
Cleaning the Evaporator
When facing the front of the Doowaggle Climate Control unit, the evaporator is on your right-hand side of the unit. If used in an environment with lots of airborne debris, the unit’s performance can degrade if the evaporator collects lots of this debris and becomes clogged.
It is recommended to use a high pressure air hose to blow any debris clean from the evaporator.
Summary:
Comfort and safety are the primary benefits of the Doowaggle Climate Control unit all-in-one functions of an air conditioner, heater, dehumidifier, and air filters.
The Doowaggle Climate Control unit has brought the joy of temperature controlled air to many small areas that are often far too small for the more powerful air conditioners and heaters commonly found in the market.
Thank you for becoming one of the many customers that have had years of enjoyment from their Doowaggle Climate Control unit purchase.
Doowaggle Climate Control Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What types of applications are the Doowaggle Climate Control unit being used for? A: There are customers using the Doowaggle Climate Control unit to heat and cool all kinds of interesting spaces including dog houses, tear drop trailers, boat cabins, toll booths, valet booths, parking attendant booths, garden sheds, backyard observatories, high altitude training tents, and many other creative applications. If you are using the product in a new and interesting manner, please tell us about it.
Q: How quiet is the Doowaggle Climate Control unit? A: The product operates at 54 decibels (dB). This sound level is classified as quiet by several loudness and noise level charts. By comparison, 50 dB is equivalent to a quiet suburb, a conversation at home, or a private office. 60 dB is equivalent to a normal conversation (3-5 feet), or a sewing machine, or a typewriter.
Q: How large of an area can be effectively temperature controlled by the Doowaggle Climate Control unit? A: We recommend the largest area to be about six cubic feet (6 ft. x 6 ft. x 6 ft.). The maximum area can be greatly affected by several variables including enclosed structure, insulation, voids, construction material, and weather (e.g. exposure to direct sunlight, wind, snow, ice, and drafts), among others.
Q: Is there an area considered too small to be temperature controlled by the Doowaggle Climate Control unit? A: We recommend the smallest area to be about two cubic feet (2 ft. x 2 ft. x 2 ft.). The minimum area is also affected by the same type of variables as the maximum area. The Doowaggle Climate Control unit would prove to be too powerful for any space too small.
Q: Other than temperature control, does the Doowaggle Climate Control unit also improve air quality? A: The Doowaggle Climate Control unit can secondarily serve as a dehumidifier removing excess moisture from the air. It is capable of lowering humidity levels below 70% thus helping to prevent mold and mildew growth in your enclosure. The pollen filters in the unit's kit provide active control of airborne particles such as dust, spores, & pollen, and when used with dog houses…pet dander or hair. These filters are washable and are quick and simple to change out.
Q: If I set the temperature of my Doowaggle Climate Control unit to a range near room temperature, will the unit’s heater automatically kick on if the temperature drops too low and the air conditioner automatically kick on if the temperature rises too high? A: No. Just as with most home central air systems, the Doowaggle Climate Control unit needs to be set to either the “heating” mode or the “cooling” mode and does not run both simultaneously. Turning the top operator dial clockwise engages the “cooling” mode and counter-clockwise, the “heating” mode. The first position in either direction is for the Low blower fan speed, and the second position is for the High blower fan speed. The temperature will be controlled automatically by the thermostat turning the Doowaggle Climate Control unit heater or AC on and off with changes in the ambient temperature. Even when the AC or heater are automatically turned off, the blower fan will continue to operate based on the “high” or “low” speed setting you have selected to maintain a comfortable air flow. This is helpful to keep air circulating in the temperature controlled space, whether or not the air is still being heated or cooled.
Q: I want to use a portable generator to power the Doowaggle Climate Control unit. What do I need? A: The Doowaggle Climate Control unit requires extra power to start up and considerably less power once it gets going. The starting power is roughly three (3) times the amount of power needed to run the unit. As the Doowaggle Climate Control unit consumes about 380 Watts for the air conditioner, we recommend at least a 1000 Watt generator for initial power-up. The heater requires about 600 Watts.
Q: I want to power the Doowaggle Climate Control unit from a car or boat battery. Do I need an inverter, and if so what kind? A: The Doowaggle Climate Control unit will require an inverter to run off of a car or boat battery, or for that matter, any DC power source. As with using a power generator, the most important thing to understand is what the AC unit will draw from the inverter while the compressor starts up. The starting power is roughly three (3) times the amount of power needed to run the unit. We recommend at least a 1000 Watt inverter for initial power-up. Once powered up, about 380 Watts are required to maintain air conditioning. The heater requires about 600 Watts.
Q: Will the Doowaggle Climate Control unit work with longer hoses? A: The Doowaggle Climate Control unit ships with two hoses with a diameter of 2 3/8" that have a maximum extension of about 22 inches in length (the hose is like one found on a clothes dryer that can compress and extend). We know of customers that have installed longer hoses up to about 4 feet in length with a similar 2 3/8” diameter and the unit still performs well. Be aware that the length and diameter of the hoses will affect airflow to the area to be heated or cooled. The longer the hose and the wider the diameter...the lower the air pressure will be on the receiving end of the hose.
Q: Why does the Doowaggle Climate Control unit need “primed” by letting it run for 15 minutes, turning it off for 5 minutes, and then back on for 15 minutes again? Why shouldn’t I turn the unit back on again for 5 minutes after turning it off? A: The Doowaggle Climate Control units are fully tested at the factory when built. However, because of transit and possible storage times, the coolant in the system may settle and not fully charge the compressor. By priming the unit as we recommend, it helps distribute the coolant throughout all the seals in the compressor and keep the air conditioner operating at peak efficiency. The same holds true for priming the Doowaggle Climate Control unit when the air conditioner has not been used for an entire season. The Doowaggle Climate Control unit should be re-primed to help it perform at maximum efficiency.
Q: Can I install the Doowaggle Climate Control unit indoors? A: Yes. If the Doowaggle Climate Control unit is used indoors, you can effectively “spot cool” an area because the system utilizes a “pressure head” that dispels cold air through the air output port (or air hose). What you need to consider is the heat discharge by the air conditioner. The way an air conditioner works is that it transfers heat out of the area to be cooled and discharges it elsewhere, normally outdoors where the Doowaggle Climate Control unit unit is most commonly installed. The Doowaggle Climate Control unit will generate more cold air than the warm air it dispels…but it will discharge warm air nonetheless. For indoor “spot cooling” applications, you just need to be okay with how much heat would be discharged inside where the unit is installed.
Q: What kind of temperature range can I expect from my Doowaggle Climate Control unit? A: The answer to this question is highly dependent on the size of the area to be temperature controlled, how well it is insulated, what type of weather it is exposed to, and other such factors. On average though, in normal operating environments, the unit typically performs in the 63 – 90 degrees Fahrenheit range.
Q: I need a system with more heating/cooling capacity than 2500 BTU, and the typical 10,000+ BTU products on the market are way too powerful for my needs. Do you have any suggestions? A: When applications require more power, you can use multiple Doowaggle Climate Control units to provide sufficient heating and cooling. A multiple unit configuration also provides greater protection due to redundancy in the event of a single unit failure.
Q: How much does the Doowaggle Climate Control unit cost to operate? A: The unit is very efficient and consumes about the same amount of energy as four standard light bulbs. This is estimated to cost only about $7 a month to operate.
Q: How long should my Doowaggle Climate Control unit last? A: The unit was designed for outdoor use and is built with a tough NEMA rated R-12 insulated enclosure. With proper care, it should operate for about 10 years under normal usage.
Q: How much does the Doowaggle Climate Control unit weigh and how big is it? A: The unit weighs 42 pounds. It measures 16.3" x 14.5" x 18.5". The small size and weight make it very portable.
Q: Can I recharge the air conditioner in my Doowaggle Climate Control unit? What coolant does it use? A: The unit uses R134a refrigerant. It is a sealed compressor so there is no valve to recharge the unit’s air conditioner. Having a sealed unit minimizes losses of refrigerant and helps keep your unit performing longer.
Doowaggle Climate Control unit Troubleshooting
Q: My Doowaggle Climate Control unit doesn’t seem to turn on. Is it broken? A: Please confirm that you have the Doowaggle Climate Control unit plugged in. A standard US household electrical outlet or a power generator capable of producing 110V-115V 60Hz are perfectly suitable sources of power. If you have confirmed that you have power and your Doowaggle Climate Control unit still does not work and, then please contact Customer Service.
Q: Why doesn’t my Doowaggle Climate Control unit generate cold air? A: The Doowaggle Climate Control unit provides 2500 BTU of cooling capacity air conditioner. This will not feel “ice cold” like some more common air conditioners on the market that are typically 10,000 BTUs or greater. The Doowaggle Climate Control unit uses a closed-loop system that largely recycles the air, cooling it a little bit more on every cycle. It could take several minutes of operation for the air temperature to change a few degrees. We recommend that you re-prime your unit per the Instruction Installations to make sure the coolant is fully distributed through the compressor. Run the unit for 30 minutes on the air condition mode (turn upper dial clockwise from the “Off” position). If after continued operation the Doowaggle Climate Control unit does not seem to be cooling properly, please contact Customer Service.
Q: My Doowaggle Climate Control unit develops some ice build-up when running the air conditioner. Is my unit defective? A: Maybe not. The unit is designed to recycle air in and out of an enclosed space that is to be temperature controlled. Each time the air is recycled, it is incrementally either cooled or heated based on the operating mode selected by the user. If the Doowaggle Climate Control unit is operating in the open without being hooked up to an enclosed space, or in an area larger than 6 ft. x 6 ft. x 6 ft., the unit’s thermostat will never detect a change in air temperature to turn the unit off. Having the unit run non-stop for a long period of time could cause ice build up on the condenser. To correct, simply turn the unit off until the ice melts. Make sure you have your unit installed properly following the Installation Instructions included with your Doowaggle Climate Control unit. Other possible issues that could cause ice build up include: 1) Dirty blower fan blades or a non-functioning blower fan. If the unit is not moving as much air as it should, it will be blowing too little air across the evaporator coil. 2) Debris-blocked evaporator coils. When an evaporator coil becomes blocked with debris, the slow down in air flow may cause the coil to become so cold that the normal condensate forming on its surface freezes. 3) Loss of coolant/refrigerant. The Doowaggle Climate Control unit is a sealed unit and cannot be recharged. In the event it has lost a significant amount of coolant, frost could build up on the evaporator coil. If you believe the unit is not working properly, please contact Customer Service.
Q: My Doowaggle Climate Control unit is under warranty and isn’t working properly. Who do I contact? A: Please contact your place of purchase to begin the process of filing a product warranty claim. When you purchased your unit, it came with a Product Registration card. If you returned the card, it will assist us in more quickly processing your warranty claim.
Q: My Doowaggle Climate Control unit is out of warranty and isn’t working properly. Can I have it serviced? A: Yes. After the warranty period, please contact Customer Service for service inquires.
Q: I need replacement parts for my Doowaggle Climate Control unit. Are they available and where can I get them? A: Yes. We can assist you with replacement parts. Some parts are easy to replace and do not require technical expertise.
Okay I want a new dog house but what size do I need? There are several obvious considerations when selecting the right size house for your dog. You will need to consider the height of your dog for the door opening; they need to clear the door when they enter, however it is wise to have the entry as small as possible to help retain heat in the winter or to keep the house cooler in the summer. So if the entry is approximately three fourths of the length (shoulder to ground) of your dog they can enter comfortably. However this is a guideline you know your dog better than anyone. If your dog is elderly “ducking” (as most dogs do while entering a door) may be difficult and should be taken into consideration. The next consideration is the width and the length for your dog, again breeds vary as does each dog. Your dog needs to be able to enter the dog house and turn around. Is your dog overweight? If so that needs to be taken into consideration. A guideline that can be used is not having the house more than 25% bigger than your dog. So if your dog is 20 inches in length (nose to flank not including tail) then you may consider a house 25 inches in length & 25 inches in width or a little larger. Again this is a guideline. If you are in a warm climate year round having the house a bit larger is not a problem. On the other hand an oversized house in a harsh winter climate is going to be hard to retain heat. If you can’t decide, or if you think your dog is in-between sizes it is wise to go to the next size larger, look at it this way if you were buying a mattress would you want your feet hanging over the end? Next consideration is the height of the dog house. The 25% guideline applies here as well so if your dog stands 20 inches from head to toes your house should be approximately 25 inches tall or a little larger. It is not a problem if the height is more than 25% as long as it does not exceed 50% of your dog’s height. So there you have some guidelines, if you are still confused watch your dog and the next time they are stretched out on the floor take note of the space they need to be comfortable get a tape measure and measure that area. |
